History

The origin of the university was found with the amalgamation of Wolverhampton Tradesmen’s and Mechanics’ Institute in 1827. At that time Wolverhampton Free Library (1870) was updated in the technical, scientific, commercial and general evening sessions. This gave birth to the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College in 1926. In 1931, the foundation stone of Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College was laid by Prince George. The Music Department became popular among technical colleges, established in1945. In 1951, the name was converted to Wolverhampton and Staffordshire College of Technology. By 1964, the college initiated BA degree programs to expand Higher Education.

In 1966, the name of the college was again changed to Wolverhampton College of Technology. Then, in 1969 the Wolverhampton Polytechnic was established with the Municipal School of Art. The New School of Art and Design emerged in 1970, opened by Sir Charles Wheeler. In 1988, the Polytechnic converted its name to Wolverhampton Polytechnic. In 1992, the Polytechnic was given university status and became the University of Wolverhampton.

The Quality Assurance Agency commended Wolverhampton University for providing exceptional educational opportunities for its students, making it the region’s first institution of higher education to receive such an honour. Since the last Research Excellence Framework (REF), the University of Wolverhampton has dramatically expanded its research, submitting four new subject areas and a 75 percent employee increase.

Student Life

The University of Wolverhampton Students’ Union (Wolves SU) raises the students’ voices looking for a positive change. Wolverhampton Students’ Union is the mouthpiece of students, active enough from the fresher’s week to Alumni night. They take every necessary initiative for students’ well-fare and make sure every student is getting the best value for money for university courses. Over 600 Course Representatives as a volunteer spend their valuable time to gather views and feedback from their fellow students.

Wolves SU recognizes the importance for flexibility of the course specification. They also work as co-creator in the academic journey by taking the course and school-related feedback. Wolverhampton in the West Midlands is well-known to live in the UK. It is a part of Staffordshire, specialized in the wool trade. Therefore, the city is surrounded by the shopping centre, pubs, clubs or swan, art galleries.

Accommodation

Students choose City Campus accommodation that provides en-suite facilities or shared bathrooms. There are available rooms, allocated on a first come first-served basis. City Campus accommodation is closed to the Millennium City Building, where most of the lectures take place. Heantun Point is another favorite student accommodation in Wolverhampton. High street shops, bars and restaurants, the on-site gym, films, theatre, music, art, all are available for University students.

Walsall Campus is an excellent multi-million pound Sports Centre with expert staff and well- decorated sports science laboratories. Walsall Ensuite Accommodation provides en-suite bedrooms and Kitchens. Bedrooms are decorated with a bed, wardrobe, desk, chair, bookshelf, curtains, etc. Similarly, Kitchens are equipped with a modern microwave, kettle, fridge, and so on. Telford Campus provides ensuite accommodation along with a communal kitchen and other facilities.

The University of Wolverhampton also provides private accommodation including student houses, flats and halls. Whitmore reans, Dunstall, Fiveways House, West park all are popular and centrally located destinations.

Transport

Getting around the Walsall or Telford campus couldn’t be easier without the service of free shuttle buses. It takes a 20-minute train journey to travel to Birmingham city. Public transports are pretty much easier and reliable to travel from one place to another like buses, trains or Metro. These modes are comparatively cost effective means of travel around the West Midlands and Shropshire.

By smart ticketing, term-time tickets for monthly or yearly reduces the travel cost. Therefore, car share is a more sociable and less stressful option that reduces parking problems, costs for fuel. An electric car is a viable as well as sustainable means of travelling. Moreover, the University’s new train line is set up a Rail booking provision for students. Last but not the least, walking and cycling remain a great way to stay fit and de-stress.

Location

The three main campuses are conveniently located near Birmingham (the second largest city in the United Kingdom): Wolverhampton City, Telford, and Walsall. The city center of Wolverhampton, in addition to the Springfield campus, constitutes the primary urban campus. The Telford campus is on a greenfield inside the grounds of Priorslee Hall, a grade-II listed 18th-century redbrick mansion. In contrast, the Walsall campus is one mile from the town center.

Stratford-upon-Avon and the Wolverhampton Wanderers’ home stadium are only two of the many cultural attractions close to Wolverhampton, home to over 22,000 students.
