History

University of Central Lancashire started its journey back in 1828. People knew it as ‘Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. After 54 years of education services, it received a significant donation. The Trustees of Edmund Robert Harris provided it in 1882. And the institute then adopted the name ‘Harris Institute’. In 1956 the government started a re-organisation of technical education. So, the institute again changed its name to ‘Harris College’. UCLan had gone through many evolutions and changes over years. Following these changes, it became a Polytechnic institute ‘Preston Polytechnic’ in 1973. In 1984, it introduced its name to people Lancashire Polytechnic’.

In the year 1992, the government permitted degree-awarding powers to polytechnics. Finally the institute the ‘University of Central Lancashire’. It created the logo of ‘UCLan’ in 2007. The university again came with a new brand, logo, and colour in 2020. These are symbols of a strong place of learning, where goals become real successes. With a proud long history, the university is growing to a leading position. Today, UCLan courses include 400 undergraduate and over 200 postgraduate. All the courses in UCLan are taught by professionals.

The Physics department at UCLan received the highest overall rating in the REF 2021, with 90% of its submitted research being deemed world-leading or internationally good (4 or 3 stars, respectively). With 83% of its total research submissions rated 4 stars or higher, UCLan’s Social Work and Social Policy department likewise did well. Although Modern Languages and Linguistics received a 75% average for a 4-star impact, the Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy fields averaged a 79% total 4-star rating. 

UCLan’s philosophy department placed eighth nationally out of 35 submissions with a 4-star impact, with 50% of the research classified as world-leading after submitting to REF for the first time.In terms of research effect, Business and Management Studies performed exceptionally well, with 100% of its contribution being ranked 4/3 stars, a significant increase from REF2014, and placing it in the top 20% of the UK for 4-star impact.

Does UCLan offer scholarships to international students?

Is IELTS required for UCLan?

UCLan’s MBBS programme requires students to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum 7.0 IELTS equivalent score as well as a 70% average in each course, a 3.5 GPA in the multiple mini interview.

What is the entry requirement for UCLan?

All applications should show satisfactory performance at the GCSE level, and many courses demand the equivalent of three A2 level credentials. We expect students to have completed and passed both Arithmetic and English at the GCSE level before enrolling in most of our programmes.
