History

The University of Northampton has a long and interesting history. It was founded in 1924 as Nene College, a teacher training college in the town of Northampton. In the years following World War II, the college expanded rapidly, adding new buildings and courses in a variety of fields. In 1975, the college merged with Northampton College of Art to form Nene College of Higher Education. In the 1990s, the college began to focus on becoming a more research-oriented institution, and in 1999 it was granted degree-awarding powers. In 2005, it was officially granted university status and became the University of Northampton.

Since becoming a university, the University of Northampton has continued to grow and expand. It has developed a number of new programs and facilities, and has established strong links with industry and businesses in the local area. Today, it is a thriving institution with a diverse student body and a reputation for providing high-quality, practical, and career-focused education.

Accommodation

International students can choose between apartments on the upper floors (there are five total) or townhouses on the lower floors (each of which has a manicured courtyard). While most students will prefer living on campus, the University also provides affordable housing options in off-campus Halls of Residence. All Northampton student housing comes completely furnished and with all utilities paid for, with the exception of a TV license, which is the responsibility of the tenant.

All guest rooms are wired and wirelessly connected to the University’s system. The University provides round-the-clock on-campus security with a combination of armed security guards, closed-circuit television, and the residential life team, which also offers students counselling and other support services.

Location 

Leicester Square in central London is only 90 minutes away from Northampton, and the city is also conveniently close to Birmingham, Luton, Milton Keynes, and Leicester.

The city of Northampton is well connected to the rest of the United Kingdom and Europe via road and rail, and it is also serviced by five major international airports.

The county dubbed “The Rose of Shires” features rolling landscapes, castles, and canals just waiting to be explored, while nearby nationally famous music venues and theatres, multiplex and arthouse cinemas, and a multitude of restaurants, pubs, and cafés provide students with a true urban experience.
