In 1988, it collaborated with the renowned University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology. In 2005, the university was given its legal name, Cardiff University.

It was then well-known as an independent university with the beginning of awarding degrees. Therefore, the institution is the third-oldest university in Wales and the only Welsh member of the Russell Group of research-based universities. Cardiff University consists of 26 academic schools.
