University of Winchester

History

The University of Winchester first started its’ journey in 1840. In the beginning, the Church of England established the Winchester Diocesan Training School for the training of elementary schoolmasters. After that, the institute went through many changes. In 1847, it became Winchester Training College, and it owned a new house in 1862 on Cathedrals’ land, known as University’s Alfred Quarter. We know this building as Winton Building now.

From 1928 to 2003, the institute served as King Alfred’s College. In this period, the college started to provide many new degrees. In 2003, The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) appreciated the level and quality of the colleges’ education, and in 2004 it changed the name to University College Winchester. Finally, in 2005, the college achieved a full university title and became the University of Winchester. The university earned a Research degree awarding powers from the Privy Council in 2008. Years back in 1840, only 10 students were there, and now this institute is serving about 8,000 students with pride.

Student life

The Student Union plays a big role here. It is situated in the University Center. There are bars, a cinema screen, and others within the 550 spaces of the University Center venue. The Winchester Students Union runs many clubs, shops, sports, arranges different types of programs and events.

The Union always works to support students and encourage them to share their talents and thoughts. It runs all types of students’ media. Moreover, Winchester as a city is also amazing. The Sunday Times recognized the city as ‘The Best Place to Live 2016’, it got a higher place in the Royal Mail Happiness Index 2019. Students can access the main points of the city easily from the campus and enjoy the beautiful city.

Accommodation

The University of Winchester provides an excellent student housing system for students and has a good reputation for it. Both the on-campus and off-campus residences are available. The University of Winchester has made the travels easy for students. It ensures a green transport system for staff and students. They can also get discounts on local transports. Cycle storage, cycle, and bike servicing centers are available where students can show University ID cards to get discounts.

The rail station is only 10 minutes away from the campus and local buses are easy to access too. Students and staff who use these services regularly can enjoy attractive discounts on tickets.
